What is new in the 2022 Silverado 1500?
Chevrolet continues to set the standard for full-size pickup trucks with the Silverado 1500. If you’re looking for a truck that can work all week and play all weekend, the 2022 Silverado can do it all. Chevy redesigned the Silverado in 2019 to nearly universal approval for its powerful performance. However, some truck enthusiasts felt it needed interior and technology improvements.
Chevy heard and responded with the best Silverado yet. So let’s take a closer look at what makes the Silverado such a compelling truck suitable for every purpose.
Upgraded Interior

Gone are the Spartan materials of the old interior, replaced by premium cloth and leather upholstery to go with real, open-pore wood trim and stainless steel speaker caps. New bucket seat designs offer elevated comfort and support and enable the new center console with an electronic shift lever instead of the column shifter. In addition, two new interior colors, Jet Black and Nightshift Blue, add sophisticated style.
In-vehicle tech runs through a massive 13.4-inch touchscreen that operates vehicle infotainment. The horizontal orientation augments the dashboard layout, presenting an open space. In addition, Chevy includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Google, and Bluetooth technology to connect your smart devices. For example, you can sync your cellphone, make calls, access navigation, stream your favorite music, and be more hand-free using built-in voice recognition software.
You also get a 12.3-inch driver information screen. This fully digital screen displays all your critical driving data. In addition, you can customize the information displayed. A Bose premium audio comes standard on the top trims, and you can add this as part of an option package on the lower trims.
You can get GM’s updated version of Super Cruise on the High Country model. Super Cruise enables hands-free driving on over 200,000 miles of compatible roads. It works with the cruise control system to keep you at a preset speed and distance in traffic. Super Cruise can change lanes and even navigate off-ramps and helps reduce driver fatigue while improving safety. The 2022 Silverado will still feature the rearview camera mirror, head-up display, and Chevy’s advanced towing technology suite with multiple camera angles.
More Curb Appeal
Chevy revamped the entire lineup with a new front fascia. The Silverado features a more modern grille design with lower headlights, giving the front fascia a more challenging stare. In addition, Chevy added winged daytime running lights (DRL) on the upper trims. These DRLs play in animated sequence as you approach and walk away from the truck and when you start the engine. Finally, you have three new colors to choose from — Sand Dune, Glacier Blue, and Dark Ash.
Power to Perform
Among the myriad engine options available, the 2.7-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine returns with some tweaking. This engine still puts out 310 horsepower but cranks out an impressive 420 pound-feet of torque. That’s up by over 70 pound-feet from the previous 2.7-liter engine. Engineers did this by combining the increased strength of engine block, crankshaft, main bearing, and piston rings. As a result, this powertrain can tow up to 9,600 pounds when properly equipped.
If you plan on some heavy-duty towing, Chevy offers a 6.2-liter V-8 engine. When you configure the 2022 Silverado 1500 with four-wheel drive and a double cab and add the max towing package, the truck can tow up to 13,300 pounds. In addition, Chevy offers a new 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine with improvements made to the cooling system if you prefer diesel power. When combined with a series of chassis upgrades, the towing capacity on this powertrain also reaches 13,300 pounds in towing capacity. That’s an increase of 4,000 pounds in towing capacity over the former 3.0-liter turbo-diesel.
Chevy Safety Assist
Chevy’s suite of driver-assist systems will come standard on every 2022 Silverado trim level. The suite uses a combination of radar and cameras to monitor around your Silverado. Included in the package, you’ll find a forward collision alert that scans the road ahead and alerts you to potential obstacles. Should you fail to react, the automatic emergency braking system engages with brake support to help mitigate or avoid a possible accident.
You also get lane keep assist with lane departure warning, two systems that track your Silverado when traveling within marked lanes. These systems alert you to detect an unintentional drift and keep you centered with gentle steering input.
New ZR2 Trim
Now, Chevy offers a race-proven, off-road-inspired truck in the new Silverado 1500 ZR2. This truck comes with a factory lift and enhanced 4×4 systems with premium interior and cutting-edge in-vehicle tech. In addition, the ZR2 upgrades the suspension system with new Multimatic 40-millimeter spool-valve dampers for better performance, whether you’re rock crawling, dune running, or simply riding around town.
Under the hood, the ZR2 uses the 6.2-liter V-8 engine that pumps out 420 horsepower and produces 460 pound-feet of torque. As a result, the ZR2 can haul up to 1,440 pounds in the bed and tow up to 8,900 pounds. Other standard enhancements include tuned springs that increase suspension travel and 33-inch off-road tires.
In addition, the new steel front bumper placed higher enables a 31.8 approach angle that’s more than previous Silverado models. Finally, this front bumper includes removable end caps, allowing easy replacement should you clip a rock or tree on your latest off-road excursion.
Trim-exclusive exterior touches like the black hood insert, signature grille, ZR2 badging, 18-inch alloy wheels, and dark trim add unique style.
