Things To Do This New Year in Columbia, TN
After the Christmas and New Year’s holidays draw to a close, you may still have time on your hands before the kids go back to school. Because the winter weather in Columbia can get pretty cold, you might be struggling to find fun things to do to entertain the whole family. Luckily, there are many options for you around town. The team at Stan McNabb Chevrolet of Columbia has put together this list of things you can do in the new year here in Columbia to ensure you and the family can get out and about.
Visit the Library
Location: 211 W. Eighth St.
Hours: Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The library is a great place to go, no matter where you live, especially on a cold day. But the Maury County Library is truly top-notch. It hosts various programs that appeal to all ages. Storytime is fun for younger children, and you can find a date that suits your needs, as they run this event several times a week. Older kids can join the Lego club, and everyone will enjoy searching for a good read at regular book sales.
There’s also a tween book club where young kids can read new books and discuss them with other kids their own age. You’ll have to check the library’s calendar to see what’s happening during winter break. Even if there aren’t any specific events, you’ll find a wonderful selection of books for everyone in the family.
Check Out aMuse’um
Location: 123 W. Seventh St.
Hours: Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At aMuse’um, children can play and explore in an environment created just for them. With lots of exhibits and activities, the kids will stay entertained for hours. They can scoop ice cream in the kid-sized ice cream shop, play dress up in clothes for different professions, go shopping in the pretend store, and learn about dental health with a larger-than-life set of teeth. For little artists, there’s a water painting wall and a light wall for creating masterpieces. There are also rotating exhibits that will challenge their minds to think outside the box.
If your youngster has a birthday during the holidays, this is the perfect place to host a party. There are always events happening, so stop in and see what’s going on.
Head to Maury County Park
Location: 1018 Maury County Park Drive
Hours: Daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Although the weather may not be ideal for playgrounds this time of year, you can still get outside for a little while. Maury County Park is a perfect place to go for some fresh air and, hopefully, sunshine in the new year.
Take the kids on the Storybook Trail for a unique walk that combines nature and reading. It’s located on the nature trail, which is Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 accessible. You’ll find storybooks along the path at your kids’ height, so they can see the words and pictures. The story unfolds as you move along the trail, getting the kids excited about what’s next. This can also help take their mind off the weather if it’s a little chilly out. The story changes each month, too, so even if you’ve been before, there’s always a new tale to enjoy.
Grab a Bite at Square Market & Cafe
Location: 36 Public Square
Hours: Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
While you’re out and about, you might need to grab a bite to eat. Square Market & Cafe is a fabulous place for a family meal. Its menu offers a variety of soups, sandwiches, pasta dishes, and more. In fact, there’s something to please every palate. If you’re feeling the chill, order an espresso, hot chocolate, or one of its signature lattes. It also has hot tea if you prefer. For breakfast, you can choose a breakfast burrito or a cracked egg omelet with three ingredients. On the kid’s menu, youngsters can order kid’s pasta or grilled cheese.
