Whether you like freshly baked bread or pastries, or like to sit down in a bakery to enjoy a delicious piece of cake and chat with a friend, having a few choice bakeries in your area is always a big plus. If you live in or around Columbia, TN, here are a few bakeries that offer exquisite baked goods and attentive service.

B’s Salty & Sweet

B’s Salty & Sweet provides small-batch artisan baked goods that are made with the highest-quality ingredients. Owners and husband and wife, David and Bethany, made their living from selling their baked goods at farmer’s markets until they were able to open B’s Salty & Sweet in the Factory of Columbia last year. Since the opening, the couple has been overwhelmed by the local support they’ve been receiving.

The bakery-cafe offers artisanal sourdough, made the traditional way with organic flour, water, salt, and a sourdough starter. No commercial yeast, dairy, or dough conditioners are included in the recipe. Patrons are also treated to sweet braided bread loaves, known as babka, which are made from scratch, as well as the couple’s version of pop tarts, which feature their original pie dough crust and homemade fillings. Other treats include croissants, signature chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes, muffins, and sweet rolls.

A light lunch menu is also provided. The lunch menu typically consists of one item, which varies every day. Depending on the day of the week, you can enjoy healthy options such as stuffed bell peppers served with a side salad, or a falafel burger on a soft wheat bun served with garlic mayo and a side salad with tahini dressing.

You can sit down for lunch at the modern and attractive venue, or you can order online. They offer a curbside pickup service. If you go for an item that’s listed as “same day,” it will be available on the day; however, you’re also able to choose from a list of pre-order items, in which case it will take one to two business days for your order to be prepared.

Pie Sensations

Pie Sensations was originally founded by Becky and Jean, who started out by selling baked pies door to door. They did so well that they were able to open Pie Sensations in 2010 at No. 26 Public Square in Columbia. Jean dreamed of the bakery’s signature pie, called Turtle Pie, and woke up the next morning and baked it. The pie has been awarded Best Pie at the Tennessee State Fair a few times.

The current owner,  Richard Whittington, is proudly following in the big footsteps of the founders. Other accolades have followed, such as the 2019 Best Pie in Nashville and the 2019 Taste of the South Top Ten Pie. You can savor your sugary treat in the cheery bakery with its candy pink walls and large display cases filled with beautiful pies. Or you can order online and collect your pies at the shop.

On the menu is a wide assortment of berry, chocolate, chess, and cream & icebox pies. Decadent options include blueberry, chocolate meringue, pecan, Strawberry Extreme, Jack Daniel’s Chocolate Pecan, and Triple Berry Crumb. Gluten-free and sugar-free options are also available. Other mouthwatering menu items include homemade truffles, fudge, and whoopie pies, which are cupcakes with a creamy center.

Sweet Bakes

The owner of Sweet Bakes, Shell Snyder, had a dream for many years to own a bakery. So, when she gave up her job after her first daughter was born, she started a home-based bakery. When the family moved to Columbia, she took a leap of faith and opened Sweet Bakes — a decision she has not regretted. Since its opening only a few years back, the bakery has garnered quite the following of loyal patrons.

The main focus of this bakery cafe is to supply donuts and cakes that are baked daily from scratch. Shell states that apart from the fact that nothing beats a fresh cake donut, donuts also offer a great excuse for family and friends to get together and create some sweet memories. On the menu, you’ll find a variety of cake and yeast donuts in flavors such as cinnamon sugar, brown butter glazed, maple syrup, salted caramel, and chocolate-dipped.

Other bakery items include cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, chocolate chip cookies, and ready-made cakes. You can also pre-order a custom cake for special occasions. Apart from sweet treats, the menu offers a few breakfast and lunch options, including oatmeal, homemade soup, and grilled Panini sandwiches. Patrons can either sit down in the pleasant venue or opt for curbside pickup.

Spring Hill Bakery

Spring Hill Bakery, which is run by owner and head baker Sarah Gonzalez, is located in Spring Hill, which is about a 16-minute drive out of Columbia. Sarah initially opened a home-based bakery, which involved selling her artisan breads, cookies, and confections at farmer’s markets and local events. Less than a year after opening her business, Sarah opened a storefront in Spring Hill with the aim of supplying Spring Hill with fresh homemade bread and cookies.

After running a successful business for over four years, Sarah decided to close the storefront bakery and is now running a made-to-order bakery. Customers can order online, and both a pickup and a delivery service are available. The menu consists of three flavors of delectable cinnamon rolls, namely original, cream cheese, and cinnamon cream cheese, to which you can add extra vanilla icing or cream cheese frosting. You can also order six-packs of homemade chocolate chip, molasses, snickerdoodle, or sprinkle cookies.

In addition to selling her baked goods, Sarah is offering baking courses, which include lessons on how to bake focaccia, quick breads, artisan breads, and cinnamon rolls. All courses currently cost around $25.

Next time, when a sugar craving hits or you’re in the mood for some freshly baked artisan bread, drop by these bakeries in and around Columbia. Apart from delicious baked goods, you’ll also receive friendly service, both of which will brighten up your day and keep you coming back for more.
