Introducing the all new 2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV

Chevy has gained valuable experience in the electric crossover segment with the Bolt electric utility vehicle (EUV), and now it’s time to bring one of its favorite gas-powered nameplates into the electric vehicle (EV) age. The Equinox EV is expected to hit Chevy showrooms later in 2023, just in time for the 2024 model year. Although it shares a name with the gas-powered Equinox, Chevy has developed a futuristic design that retains some traditional features to give this electric SUV a unique look. Here’s what our Columbia EV experts know so far about the Equinox EV.

What Is the Chevrolet Equinox EV?

2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV

The Equinox EV is a two-row electric SUV that will join the 2024 Chevy lineup in the fall of 2023. The latest addition to Chevy’s EV lineup is slightly larger than the Bolt EUV, which was Chevy’s first all-electric SUV. Both EVs offer seating for five people, but the Equinox EV has the edge when it comes to cargo storage.

The Equinox EV’s exterior gets rid of a traditional grill since there’s no need for air to cool a combustion engine. The hood is also a little shorter than the gas-powered Equinox’s. Small airflow intakes are on the front end of the body to provide cooling for GM’s Ultium platform that serves as the base for this electric crossover’s power train.

The Equinox EV is part of Chevy’s ambitious EV transformation plan. By the middle of this decade, GM’s largest brand is hoping to bring out up to 30 battery-powered EVs. Chevy officials expect the EV crossover market to be among the most competitive segments, which is why they’ve already entered the Bolt EUV and Equinox EV into the race.

Chevrolet Equinox EV Power Train and Driving Range

There are several power train configurations on offer with the Equinox EV. The base setup is a front-wheel-drive system that produces 210 horsepower. You can opt for an all-wheel-drive alternative that adds a second electric motor to the mix and boosts the overall output to a punchy 290 horsepower. A front-wheel-drive setup should prove adequate if you’ll be doing most of your driving around town, but you may prefer the additional power if you frequently drive on the highway with your crossover.

The Equinox EV offers two battery options. The smaller battery comes standard in the base trim and is good for 250 miles of driving range on a full charge. The larger battery pack comes in all other trims. Opting for front-wheel drive boosts the driving range to 300 miles. All-wheel-drive Equinox EVs have a slightly reduced driving range, which comes in at 280 miles. Both battery packs are suitable for direct current fast charging, allowing you to add an estimated 70 miles of driving in as little as 10 minutes.

Chevrolet Equinox EV Cargo and Passenger Capacity

The Equinox EV has a slightly lower maximum cargo capacity than its gas-powered namesake, with a maximum of 57 cubic feet available when you fold the rear seats flat. Other than that, the interior dimensions of this vehicle are comparable with the standard Equinox. There are five seats across two rows and a decent amount of headroom and legroom for front- and rear-seat passengers.

In terms of the design, the interior takes a lot of inspiration from the more compact Bolt EUV. Up front, you’ll also notice a digital dashboard that’s quite similar to the Silverado EV, Chevy’s all-new electric pickup. In the base trim, the interior design remains quite simple, but upscale features such as power-adjustable seats and leather upholstery are available as you move up through the trim lineup.

Chevrolet Equinox EV Infotainment and Safety Tech

The standard Equinox EV will come with an impressive 11-inch infotainment screen and a separate 11-inch digital gauge cluster so you can monitor your SUV’s performance. Higher trims offer a 17-inch touch screen for even more convenience when you’re accessing infotainment features.

We’ll only get to know the full list of entertainment features on offer when the Equinox EV hits our showroom. However, we’re expecting all trim levels to offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which will make it even easier for you to link your phone to your infotainment system. In addition, it’s likely that a Wi-Fi hotspot and built-in navigation system will feature as optional add-ons for some of the more luxurious trims.

Chevy will give the Equinox EV a long list of safety and driver assistance features. Standard features will include automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. One optional feature will be GM’s SuperCruise hands-free driving system, a cutting-edge feature that enables automated driving on some stretches of highway across the country.

2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Pricing and Trims

Pricing for the Equinox EV will become clearer as the year progresses, so stay in touch with us for the latest news. We’re expecting that the base Equinox EV will start at around $30,000, with some higher trims surpassing $40,000 and possibly reaching $50,000 at the top of the lineup. If you keep in mind that Equinox EVs may be eligible for government incentives that support EV purchases, this Chevy is set to be one of the most affordable EVs on the market.
