With improvements in electric transportation technology, more and more people are turning to electric vehicles (EVs) for their daily commute. And vehicle manufacturers are listening. Many new electric cars are coming onto the market, and even more are on the way to keep up with demand. Chevrolet has the popular Bolt EV out already, but exciting developments are happening. SUVs are being released, and an all-electric Silverado truck is in the works and will be ready soon. Before bringing home your new electric Silverado, you’ll want to know how to charge it at home and when you go out. 2024 Silverado EV

Chevrolet is expected to release the game-changing 2024 Silverado EV in the fall of 2023. This is not just a standard Silverado with batteries and an electric engine stuck in it. Rather, Chevrolet has completely redesigned the vehicle as an electric truck from the ground up. The Ultium Platform is an integrated EV system with improved batteries that hold more charge and boost the Silverado EV’s range. Going electric doesn’t mean sacrificing power and utility. The electric Silverado has over 660 hp and 770 lb-ft of torque and can go from zero to 60 mph in under 4.5 seconds.

How To Charge Your Electric Silverado

The new Silverado EV will have a range of up to 400 miles on a full charge. You can recharge it at many EV charging stations across the country, so you won’t need to limit where you go. Just plan ahead so you know where to find a station when you need one. To help plan your route and not run out of charge in your Silverado EV, use Energy Assist in the MyChevrolet mobile app. The app monitors your charge level and helps you find the most convenient charging stations so you can recharge your truck’s batteries.

Level 2 Home Charging

Your Silverado EV is built to be plugged in to charge up the batteries rather than needing to be filled up with fuel at the gas station. There are two options to charge your new Silverado pickup truck at home. The recommended Level 2 240-volt charging requires a professional installation of a charging unit, after which you can plug in your truck and charge it overnight or whenever you’re home. This is the fastest home charging method, so it’s likely what you’ll want to have to keep your truck fully charged and ready to hit the road.

Level 1 Home Charging

Level 1 120-volt is also a great option to have available as a backup for your daily charging. It will take a little longer to get your Silverado fully charged, but it’s a convenient method that involves plugging your charging cord into a 120-volt household three-prong outlet. This makes it an invaluable tool that allows you to charge up your EV without having a charging unit installed, such as if you’re staying at a friend’s house or visiting family. Just remember to bring your charging cord, which you’ll want to keep in your electric truck whenever you leave home.

Charging on the Go

With the rise in EV use, there’s been a large expansion in charging stations. There are now over 43,000 around the country and several different networks to choose from. Most of these charging stations have Level 2 240-volt charging units — the same as you’ll use at home. Just plug in your truck while you’re out shopping or eating dinner and top up the charge. Your electric Silverado will use the CCS 1 connector to plug into the charging station unit. This is the most common type in the US and what you’ll find at most charging stations, apart from Tesla Superchargers.

Many hotels have also installed EV chargers, which is a handy way to charge up your Silverado EV overnight when you’re on a road trip and need your vehicle fully charged and ready to drive the next day. Check with the hotel beforehand to ensure it has a convenient charging option when you’re planning your trip. You’ll soon have your favorite charging spots mapped out in your area and know which ones work best for you in terms of a convenient location and price per kilowatt. That way, you’ll always have a charging spot available when you need it.

DC Public Fast Charging

If you’re on the road and need to charge up fast, look for a station that offers DC Public Fast Charging, also known as Level 3 charging. These chargers can give you an estimated 100 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes of charging and can have some vehicles charged to 80% in under an hour. While DC Fast Charging isn’t as common as Level 2 chargers, they are available at thousands of charging stations and become more common as more people switch to EVs, and the demand for efficient charging grows.

With so many charging options now available, the time is ripe to switch your old combustion engine truck for a new innovative electric pickup truck to take you into the future. The 2024 Silverado EV is just around the corner and will soon be ready to take you places you thought an EV couldn’t go before. Keep your eyes peeled for its upcoming launch in the fall of 2023 and be the first in your neighborhood to drive one home.
