How does the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban compare to the 2021 Suburban?

With the release of the 2022 model year, drivers around Columbia wonder what new changes or updates were made. Overall, the 2021 Suburban was a thorough refresh, close to a redesign. As a result, the 2022 model doesn’t change too much from that game plan. However, there are some changes made to available colors, packages, and other details. Trim Levels

The trim levels for the Chevy Suburban remain unchanged from 2021 to 2022, with the LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. There’s also the 1FL Commercial Fleet model with up to nine seats, perfect for a business in need of passenger shuttle vehicles. The 2021 Chevy Suburban brought the RST, Z71, and High Country models back to the Suburban, and these three upper-tier trims are here once again. For a quick overview:

• The Suburban RST is the more affordable model if you want the 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Most of the options from the LT carry over, also adding 22-inch wheels and black upholstery with red stitching.
• The Suburban Z71 builds from the RST with a two-speed transfer case, 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, an adaptive air suspension, exposed tow hooks, and a front skid plate.
• The Suburban High Country is the new top standard for luxury, with exclusive power side steps and most of the equipment from the Premier. It also gets a turbo-diesel engine, unique 22-inch wheels, surround-view parking, a rearview camera mirror, and a head-up display.

Colors and Design

Both versions of the Suburban are very similar, carrying a rugged and modern exterior, but the color options were shuffled a bit. Two colors from 2021, Shadow Gray Metallic and Graywood Metallic, have been cut. In their place are three new hues: Auburn Metallic, Evergreen Gray Metallic, and Dark Ash Gray Metallic.

The exterior is mostly the same, but one new optional package called Illumination is available on the 2022 Suburban LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. This package adds an illuminated mirror with puddle light in the shape of the Chevy logo, plus illuminated front door and lift gate sill plates.

Interior

Going into 2022, the Suburban loses HD Radio and the SD card reader in the front center console, although the USB-A and USB-C data ports are still there. For 2022, the 1FL also gets these data ports standard instead of as an option. A few other options on the 1FL were removed, like deleting the front center seat, but a Chevy Rear Fold Flat Cargo Organizer is available as a new dealer-installed option. As for other interior changes, Buckle to Drive is now standard on all models, a Sport Pedal Cover kit is available on all models, and a keyless entry keypad is available on the 1FL.

Safety

The 2021 Suburban offered Chevy Rear Park Assist on all models except the Premier and High Country. It also came with both Front and Rear Park Assist with more advanced behavioral design, but only on the Premier and High Country. For 2022, Front and Rear Park Assist are standard on all trim levels.

Reverse Automatic Braking is a new feature that can detect potential obstacles or pedestrians while backing up at speeds between 0.5 and 20 mph. This feature is available on the Premier and High Country for 2022, and Premier models now require Adaptive Cruise Control and the Enhanced Display and Alert package when equipped with Reverse Automatic Braking. This package adds HD Surround Vision, Rear Pedestrian Alert, a rear camera mirror and washer, and a head-up display. High Country Models don’t require this package to use Reverse Automatic Braking, but they will need Adaptive Cruise Control.

Infotainment

In most ways, the Suburban keeps the same interior between these two years, with 144.7 cubic feet of maximum potential cargo space and loads of tech features. For 2022, commercial 1FL and consumer LS Suburban models get a 4.2-inch Driver Information Center screen. This screen was removed from the LT, RST, and Z71. Also, an 8-inch enhanced screen was replaced by a 12-inch display with new, analog tachometers and speedometers. This screen is the new driver display standard for the 2022 Suburban LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country.

As for the central infotainment touch screen, the 2021 version with Infotainment 3 and an optional expanded replacement with Navigation are both out. The new screen for 2022 is the same size, 10.2 inches, and uses Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium like the upgraded screen from last year, only now it also carries Google assistant and apps.

The new Google-enhanced infotainment setup is standard on the 2022 Suburban LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. On 2021 versions, the 1FL used the 8-inch Infotainment 3 touch screen and the LS used the basic 10.2-inch screen. For 2022, both use the 8-inch screen.

Engine and Towing

For 2022, you no longer need to get the turbo-diesel engine specifically to opt for the engine block heater, as it appears on all equipment groups outside the Z71. Two packages were made available. The first is the RST-exclusive Sport Performance Package, enhancing the 6.2-liter V-8 engine with magnetic ride control and adding dual exhaust. The other is the Z71-exclusive Off-Road Performance Package, which adds dual exhaust and the 6.2-liter engine. Other packages were adjusted slightly in terms of availability.

For 2022, Chevy added Enhanced Trailer View to the Suburban. An available upgrade on the Premier and High Country, this feature is a combination of an auxiliary trailer camera with assist guidelines, letting you switch into a more helpful rearview camera position while towing or backing up a trailer. The Premier will also need some other features, like the Max Trailering Package, to use Enhanced Trailer View. Also, a Smart Trailer Integration Indicator is now added on LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country models with Advanced Trailering.
