If you’re in the market for a compact SUV, Chevy’s Equinox and Trailblazer are two excellent options you should consider. But how do they stack up against each other? Which Chevy provides more engine power, better fuel economy, or extra cargo space? We’ve compared some of the most important features of these two SUVs to help you make your choice.

Chevrolet Engine and Performance

Serving as Chevrolet’s introduction for new buyers to the SUV market, the subcompact Trailblazer is equipped with a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that handles daily driving needs well. It’s paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which makes for a smooth ride. In the higher trims, you can opt for a more powerful 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which can include all-wheel drive. If you choose all-wheel drive, you can opt for a nine-speed automatic transmission instead of the CVT.

If you’re looking for more power under the hood, the Chevy Equinox‘s standard 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which cranks out 170 horsepower, should do the trick. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine available, which is good for 252 horsepower. It provides impressive acceleration and cruising speeds on the highway. Front-wheel drive is standard, but an all-wheel drive is an available option in all trims apart from the base L model.

Chevrolet SUV Fuel Economy

The Equinox’s gas mileage varies depending on the power train setup you choose. With the base engine and front-wheel drive, you’ll get an average of 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Those numbers drop to 22 mpg and 29 mpg, respectively, with the more powerful 2.0-liter engine. All-wheel drive shaves another 1 mpg off your gas mileage.

As for the Trailblazer, the larger 1.3-liter turbocharged engine offers the best fuel economy with 29 mpg on city roads and 33 mpg on the highway. The smaller 1.2-liter engine achieves 28 mpg and 31 mpg, respectively, which is still good for the subcompact SUV class.

Chevy SUV Seating and Cargo

The Trailblazer is a five-seater SUV. The front seats provide good support for the driver and passenger, while the rear row is well suited for two adult passengers or three kids. The two outermost rear seats are fitted with two sets of LATCH connectors. For the subcompact class, the Trailblazer’s rear-seat legroom is impressive.

Cloth upholstery is standard in the trailblazer, but you can upgrade to synthetic leather. You can also get heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.

The Trailblazer features 25.2 cubic feet of storage behind the rear row and over 54 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Both these figures are above average in the subcompact class.

The Equinox comfortably sits five passengers, with the rear row providing ample legroom for adult passengers to sit wherever they like. In the base trim, you get cloth upholstery and four-way manually adjustable front seats. In the rear row, you’ll find two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing child car seats.

Behind the second row, the Equinox has around 30 cubic feet of cargo storage space. Fold-down the second row of seating and the cabin can accommodate about 64 cubic feet of cargo.

Chevrolet Towing Capacity

If you run out of storage space inside the cabin, the Chevy Equinox is capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds if it’s properly equipped. To do that, you’ll need the larger engine with Equinox’s towing package. The smaller base engine has a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.

The Trailblazer can tow a maximum of 1,000 pounds when properly equipped. This will require you to move up from the base trim so that you can take advantage of all-wheel drive and the larger engine.

Infotainment and Technology

The Trailblazer’s standard infotainment system includes a seven-inch screen, four-speaker stereo, and a wireless hotspot. You can pair your phone with the entertainment system by using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can upgrade to wireless device charging, satellite radio, and an eight-inch infotainment screen.

You can also add proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and automatic climate control.

The Equinox has Chevy’s Infotainment 3 system, and comes standard with a seven-inch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless hotspot. It also features Bluetooth connectivity and a six-speaker stereo.

Proximity keyless entry comes standard, which is ideal when you’re trying to access your SUV with full hands. You can upgrade to dual-zone climate control to maintain comfortable temperatures in the cabin.

Chevy Safety and Driver Assistance

Both Chevy SUVs come equipped with a wide range of safety features, such as forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. They also feature the Teen Driving mode, which allows you to set speed limits and restrict other features if your teenage son or daughter is learning to drive.

The Trailblazer received a good four out of five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Equinox received an excellent five out of five-star rating for the same tests.

Chevrolet SUV Trims

The Trailblazer is available in five trims: L, LS, LT, Active, and RS. The base trim has a starting retail price under $20,000, making it ideal for buyers on a tight budget. If you enjoy being outdoors and doing some light off-roading, the Active trim will be right for you. It offers shock absorbers for rough terrain and a skid plate. It’s also equipped with a larger engine and has the option of all-wheel drive. The RS trim exchanges the off-roading features for some more interior luxury and exterior accents, including two-tone cloth and leather upholstery, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Equinox comes in four trims: L, LS, LT, and Premier. The base trim has a starting retail price of $23,800, which is a good deal for a compact SUV. The LT trim includes the power-adjustable driver’s seat and the option of upgrading to a larger infotainment screen. The top Premier trim adds leather upholstery, a hands-free liftgate, and an option to add ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.
