The midsize Chevrolet Traverse offers SUV versatility with exceptional towing capability. Chevrolet makes the Traverse in four trim levels: LS, LT, Z71, and RS. Each model has the same 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. This powertrain produces an impressive 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque.

Every Traverse can tow up to 5,000 pounds with the Trailering Package. However, the RS and Z71 models have the Trailering Package as a standard feature. You can add the Trailering Package to the LT and LS models.

With 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, you can easily tow a bass boat to your favorite lake. Many midsize campers fall under the 5,000-pound capacity, as do Jet Skis, ATVs, motorcycles, and utility trailers.

Chevrolet hasn’t published the towing capacity of the 2024 Traverse without the Trailering Package. However, we expect it to be in the same 1,500-pound range as the 2023 model year.

The Trailering package includes a factory-installed hitch and wiring harness. That, combined with the new turbocharged engine and heavy-duty engine cooling system, increases the towing capacity.

You also get trailer sway control and hill-start assist systems with your Traverse’s Trailering Package. These systems work with StabiliTrak, an electronically controlled stability control system that uses sensors to detect when your trailer drifts from your intended line. The system intelligently adjusts braking and throttle input to keep your trailer in line.

Chevrolet has an In-Vehicle Trailering App with certain vehicles designed to improve your trailering experience. Available features such as the In-Vehicle Trailering System integrate with the myChevrolet Mobile App through a Connected Services plan, depending on your vehicle’s equipment.

Once equipped, you can access the In-Vehicle Trailering App through your touch-screen infotainment system. The app allows you to create up to five customized trailer profiles that track trailer type and mileage. Other features include a Tow/Haul reminder, a camera setup for the Transparent Trailer and other accessory cameras, trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring, and maintenance reminders.

A Trailer Light Test feature lets you test your trailer and Traverse lights with the push of a button. The test runs sequentially through brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. If the system detects an outage, it alerts you.

You can also monitor your tire pressure and temperature by installing GM-specific sensors on each trailer tire. Our service center can install these sensors and set up the system if necessary. Monitoring tire pressure and temperature improves safe towing operations and helps prevent unnecessary problems.

Chevrolet has pre-departure checklists built into the app that help guide you through the steps to ensure you complete all the connections and safety checks before embarking. You can customize your checklist to fit your trailering needs.

A trailer theft alert system provides additional comfort when trailering long distances that require you to stop for meals and rest. With the Traverse alarm system activated, the alarm will trigger if someone disconnects the trailer’s wiring harness, causing the exterior lights to flash and sound the horn.

In addition to the vehicle alarm sounding, if you have the OnStar Safety & Security Plan and Theft Alarm Notification enabled, you’ll receive phone calls, emails, and texts when the system detects a possible theft.

Towing Scenarios and Real-World Applications

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has everything you need to tow your favorite adventure toys on every excursion. A 5,000-pound towing capacity makes it well suited to bringing your ski or bass boat to the lake house without issues. In most cases, you can load up gear inside the boat provided you don’t exceed the total weight limit.

You don’t rent a cabin on a lake to watch the water. You want to get in and enjoy it. Watercraft enthusiasts love the Traverse’s towing capability because they know they can bring their boats or Jet Skis on their vacations.

Of course, some people prefer overland adventures. The Chevrolet Traverse has ample towing capacity to load several ATVs or dirt bikes on a utility trailer with plenty of space.

If you prefer camping, the Traverse can haul most midsize campers that comfortably sleep six to eight people. The Traverse has exceptional cargo room to carry all the necessary outdoor equipment to make your camping trip successful.

Maybe you need your Traverse for work-related towing. If so, you can hitch up a utility trailer loaded with mowers, trimmers, and landscape equipment. Or you can tow an enclosed trailer to events and protect your expensive merchandise from theft.

2024 Chevy Traverse Safety and Control

Towing a trailer doesn’t have to be difficult, but it would be helpful if you adhered to some basic safety rules. First, never overload your trailer. Check the trailer’s weight capacity and calculate your load before embarking.

Towing safely means you understand weight distribution. Always make sure you keep gear evenly distributed to ensure stability. A trailer can sway due to improper loading, and the best trailer sway control systems may struggle to overcome the wrong balance.

You should secure loose items in utility trailers, boats, and inside campers. Loose items will shift and topple as you travel. This shifting could lead to breaking items you count on at your destination. Items not secured in open utility trailers can also fall out and create a dangerous situation.

We always tell new towers that a trailer requires different driving techniques. You must take wider turns to avoid striking other vehicles, signs, and curbs. Changing lanes requires more space than you might be used to, so take your time and get into the proper lane well ahead of needing to for safe driving.
