Choosing Your Compact SUV: 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs. 2024 Kia Sportage

A compact SUV is a capable, versatile vehicle and an excellent choice for your local Columbia journeys or Nashville commute. Compact SUVs are efficient and fun to drive, yet small enough to maneuver in tight spaces. The 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer and Kia Sportage stand out in this segment with expressive style, cutting-edge tech, and approachable pricing. If you’re considering a new SUV, read on to see how these segment-leading SUVs compare.

Design and Styling

2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer

2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Chevrolet makes the Trailblazer in four attractive trims: the LS, LT, ACTIV, and RS. From the curb, the Trailblazer stands out with its two-toned exterior with a white roof that contrasts nicely with unique colors such as Cacti Green, Copper Harbor, and Fountain Blue. Each model has distinctive styling cues and equipment, including the off-road ACTIV and the street-savvy Trailblazer RS.

The front fascia’s restyling gives it a bold look. Chiseled lines, bulging curves, and 19-inch alloy wheels showcase its athleticism. Roof rails, a roof-mounted rear spoiler, dual exhaust ports, and LED taillights finish off its modern exterior.

Kia offers the Sportage in seven trim levels. A softer exterior with more rounded proportions stands out on the Sportage. However, other similar exterior features, such as roof rails, alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler, provide a modern style.

The Sportage has two trims geared toward the off-road adventurer. Kia’s X-Pro trim has the off-road basics, while the X-Pro Prestige model comes nicely equipped for people looking for more amenities.

Engine Performance and Fuel Efficiency

Chevrolet uses its 1.3-liter turbocharged I-3 ECOTEC engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission in all-wheel-drive Trailblazer configurations. This powertrain produces 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the Trailblazer can tow up to 1,000 pounds with a factory-installed trailer hitch. The Trailblazer is also available with a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission for models with front-wheel drive.

Chevrolet’s ECOTEC engine offers efficient performance. On surface roads, the Trailblazer rates at 26 mpg. On the highway, it gets 29 mpg, with a combined rating of 27 mpg.

Kia makes its Sportage with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter I-4 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. As a result, it rates at 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque and tows up to 1,653 pounds. A front-wheel-drive system comes standard on four trims, with all-wheel drive available as an extra.

This powertrain offers slightly less efficiency. The front-wheel-drive Sportage models get 25 mpg around town, 33 mpg on the freeway, and 28 mpg combined. All-wheel-drive trims drop to 23 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the interstate, and 25 mpg combined.

Interior Space and Comfort

The Trailblazer seats five passengers in ergonomic comfort. The base model has premium cloth upholstery available in several colors. As you move higher in the lineup, you get Chevrolet’s Evotex synthetic upholstery with the look and feel of leather and increased durability.

Seats come in various colors with exclusive red or yellow accent stitching. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel come standard on every Trailblazer.

The Trailblazer may be a compact SUV, but it doesn’t lack space. Behind the second row, you have 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space. A 60/40-split folding back seat allows multiple cargo configurations to fit longer items. The rear seat folded flat gives you 54.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The front passenger seat also folds flat, letting you fit items as long as 8.5 feet.

Like the Trailblazer, Kia uses cloth upholstery on the base Sportage model and its Syntex synthetic material in various colors for the rest of the lineup. You can add heated seats as an option on the base model, but all other trims have them standard. Unfortunately, only the top three models have a heated steering wheel, which isn’t an option on lower trims.

The Sportage also seats five people and has a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Behind the second row, you have 39.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Folding the second-row flat opens up 74.1 cubic feet of space. The Sportage doesn’t have a fold-flat front passenger seat.

Technology and Infotainment

Chevrolet held nothing back when equipping the Trailblazer with technology. An 11-inch touch screen powered by Chevrolet’s ultrawide infotainment system runs all your infotainment. You also get an 8-inch driver-information screen. These dual screens help make important information available and accessible.

You can customize the instrument display to see what you want. Your infotainment system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built-in, letting you sync your smartphone. After syncing, you can access your apps, stream your favorite music, get navigation, make calls, send texts, and more using the touch screen or intuitive voice commands.

A wireless charging pad and multiple USB ports keep everyone’s devices charged up. Other technology includes keyless entry with lockout protection and push-button start. Downloading the myChevrolet mobile app unlocks more technology.

You can lock, unlock, and start your car anywhere with a cellphone signal. Using the app, you can see vehicle health, receive maintenance reminders, and even schedule service  at Stan McNabb Chevrolet.

Kia’s base model has an 8-inch touch screen, while the rest of the lineup has a larger version similar to the Trailblazer. You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Wireless charging, multiple USB ports, and the Kia Access app keep you charged and connected. Like the Trailblazer, the Kia Access app enables remote operations, provides vehicle health reports, and lets you schedule service.

Safety Features

Your Trailblazer comes with Chevy Safety Assist, a driver-assist system suite that delivers confident driving. The suite includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist with lane departure warning, Teen Driver Technology, adaptive cruise control, lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear park assist.

Every Sportage has Kia DriveWise, a similar suite of driver-assistance technologies. These systems also provide confident driving. However, Kia doesn’t offer a teen driver system.

Comparing the two vehicles, they both have stylish exteriors, comfortable interiors, and the latest tech. However, the Trailblazer edges out the Sportage due to its efficient performance. You’ll also save a bundle when you factor in the Trailblazer’s MSRP, ranging from the base model’s $21,100 to the top-tier’s $27,100.
